Bluegill Run

Cartoon of fly fisherman being pulled into the lake by a fighting bluegill making a run like a speedboat.

Fly fishing for bluegills?

Yes! Bluegills can be found all around. They are often closer and more available than trout. And, pound for pound, they put up a great fight.

But you might think they are really easy to catch, that they aren’t the challenge that trout are. Maybe they are easy when spawning in spring, but in the other seasons of the year they can be as difficult to catch as wary, selective trout.

My only complaint is the big ones don’t readily take a dry fly, so it’s a lot of streamer fishing. But the fight they put up is worth putting away the dry flies for the streamers.
